Many believers needlessly carry around the baggage of shame and regret even though they have claimed the salvation of Christ. In your former life before Jesus, many things may have been part of your identity. My history includes teen motherhood, gossip, hateful attitudes, lying, and self-sufficiency.

When I said “Yes, Lord”, everything changed.

Jesus has done an amazing thing. He has laid bare the shame of our sin and put His own precious name on it. Every wrong thought, attitude, and action we’ve ever had or ever will have has been graciously covered by the blood of Jesus. Colossians 2 tells us that the consequences for our sin have been nailed to the cross. Hallelujah!

Beyond this, Christ has also taken the “powers and authorities” and made a  “public spectacle of them”, rendering them powerless against the mighty cross. In searching the commentaries as to what these “powers and authorities” might be, the general consensus is they are “Satan and his legions” (Barnes’ Notes). Our spiritual enemies have been shamed by the power of the cross, which means we need not bear shame.

With our sin nailed to the cross and our spiritual enemies publicly shamed, what place should the weight of sin and shame have in our lives? No place! We are covered and protected against these things.

Right now, you are free if you have chosen Jesus. This very moment you are innocent in the eyes of God. YOU are no longer the public spectacle. You are chosen, righteous, beautiful, loved, forgiven, and brand new. Live each day believing this. You have no accusers anymore.

“When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” -Colossians 2:13-15
