“But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it and it will not be taken from her.”
If you read this story, it’s about Jesus visiting the home of Martha and Mary. While Mary sat at Jesus feet, Martha was running around preparing for the dinner. She then became upset and asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. But the Lord’s answer was very revealing about what He truly wants from us. He wants us to be concerned about his business about His word, not anything else. Although this is about taking time out of your busy schedules and spending time with God, I believe it goes deeper than that. I believe Jesus is referring to all the other details we are always so worried about. About all the things that take away the peace that He gives.
Whatever you are concerned about that is keeping you from the Lord is what He is referring to. It might be your appearance, your job, or maybe some material things in your life. We are so worried about how we look that we forget and lose focus on what really matters. We are so concerned about getting that promotion that spending time in the word becomes secondary. Or maybe, just maybe we will not put our phones down and spend time with Him. If we would just sit at His feet and listen would we still be concerned with all these worldly things? Would we still fret and stress about all the ways we need to fit in or all we need to do to live the lives on those social media squares?
Don’t get me wrong, I love buying bracelets, rings and things, but I should not be so concerned that I lose focus on what is truly important in life. May I not be concerned with all the things in this world that I miss the sweet moments that Jesus offers.
