As a mom, August means back to school! Some of us are sad because we enjoy our kids being home with us everyday! Some of you are happy because the kids have driven you crazy all summer! And some of you homeschool and are trying to get back into the grove! Whatever camp you fit into, there’s no way to get around back to school!
I’m now the mom of a 10th grader and I know the saying to be true…the days are long but the years are short! I want to share with you some ways to get strength for the school year! Things to pray and do when it seems like June is never gonna come!!!
Public schools these days are scary places. I know where I live, the kids practice and know what to do if someone ever comes into their school to do harm. I can’t believe we live in a day where someone even wants to harm our students, but it happens. It has happened in my tiny town. It’s a reality for our kids. I pray for protection for our school, students and teachers often. Protect them and keep them safe. Lord, put a hedge around that school that no evil can cross. It is a scary thing for a momma to think about but praying sure helps bring peace!
My favorite chapter on protection is Psalm 91:
Whoever goes to the Lord for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty, can say to him, “You are my defender and protector. You are my God; in you I trust.” He will keep you safe from all hidden dangers… He will cover you with his wings; you will be safe in his care; his faithfulness will protect and defend you. You need not fear any…sudden attacks during the day… or the evils that kill in daylight.
and so no disaster will strike you, no violence will come near your home. God will put his angels in charge of you to protect you wherever you go.
Psalm 91:1-6, 10-11 GNT
Drugs, sex and alcohol are topics we can’t shy away from with our kids. If you think it’s not in your town, please take the covers off you eyes. It is. Our high school only has about 500…we are rural America, and deal with it. It starts in middle school and I’d dare say it starts in some elementary schools. Talk openly to your kids. Ask the questions and be ok with the answers they give. Start the conversations early. Don’t wait until high school…that’s too late. Pray for wisdom for your children. Pray for yourself, that you will have the answers to give and the right response when you are confronted with something you don’t want to hear. I pray that those substances won’t taste good if he ever tries it. That it will make him sick to his stomach. I also pray that he will come to me or a trusted adult with those things and not hide them.
“Don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and who was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourselves but to God;”
1 Corinthians 6:19 GNT
I pray for Godly friends and influences. I also pray his light will shine in darkness and he’ll be a witness to his friends. The people our kids surround themselves with are so important. They truly can make or break them. Know who your kids hang around with. Don’t just drop them off at sporting events, stay and see who’s there, who they are with and get to know those parents!
Do not be fooled. “Bad companions ruin good character.”
1 Corinthians 15:33 GNT
I pray that he retains the things he has learned, especially at test taking time. I pray God brings it back to his temperance. That he will slow down, not be nervous, and take his time. That his mind will be clear.
you may be sure that wisdom is good for the soul. Get wisdom and you have a bright future.
Proverbs 24:14 GNT
And I pray for us mommas as we embark on a new school year. That when we are tired, we will stop and take a few minutes for ourselves. That we will be praying for our kids, their teachers and their friends. That we will have strength to make it when the homework and projects get overbearing. That we can laugh and enjoy this new school year!!
Here’s to the best year yet!!
Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].
