There are times when we have to ask the question, “What am I worth?” This arises mostly from the treatment we receive from the hands of others: a friend belittles us, we experience physical abuse, or we fail to measure up in the eyes of the world.
In this life, our worth is measured by our level of education, the type of car that we drive (if we drive), our salaries, the house we live in or the amount of money we have in the bank. It seems that some days we can never measure up.
But how much are we really worth?
In the eyes of the world: our value is negligible (one author claims that the components of the human body is worth about $5.00 USD), but in the eyes of the Almighty God: we are priceless.
God created an entire world for us to exist in Genesis 1.
This world was given to us not only for us to live in but also for us to have dominion over every other created thing in it. Genesis 1:28
The Almighty created us in His image.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27.
After the fall of man, God sent His Son on earth to die for our sins.
Jesus, the Son of God, gave up His immortality and came to die a shameful death on the cross.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16-17
He adopted us and gave us His name.
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12
He formed us and watched over us in the womb. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Psalms 139:13-16
He knows us intimately.
The Bible tells us that the very hairs on our heads are numbered. Luke 12:7
He takes care of us.
Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Matt 6:25-34
He listens to us.
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24
He forgives our transgressions.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9
Jesus is making preparation for us to live with Him and His Father in mansions so beautiful and so vast, that our imagination cannot begin to perceive what they will look like.
In my Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go … I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:2-3
In exchange for all this and so much more, God doesn’t ask for much.
No fine print or hidden clauses with God. In fact, the conditions summed up in one sentence is:
“If you love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15.
The next time you feel devalued, belittled or insignificant, remember that in the eyes of the Creator, your worth is immeasurable.
