When I came up with this title, it reminded me of the saying, “a piece of cake” , or a “a piece of pie.” (both which sounds delicious to me at the moment, by the way!)
But in getting a piece of cake, or a piece of pie ,there are so many options! The variety of cakes and pies are practically endless, and usually there are certain pies and cakes that we prefer to eat at certain times in the year.
There is birthday cake for birthdays, red velvet for Valentines day, apple pie for 4th of July, and Pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving (and Chocolate cake at anytime!)
My point, (besides making myself hungry!) is we choose different types of cake/pie for different occasions, so when we pray for peace, is all peace the same, or is it “flavored” differently depending on the circumstances we are in? In other words, is all peace the same?
Let’s look at some scripture to help us answer this question.
- Phil 4:7 And the peace of God,which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- 2 Thes 3:16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
- Col 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
- Psalm 29:11 The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.
- Isaiah 32:17 The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.
When we ask for peace, God gives us a word. For every circumstance that I’ve asked for peace, it comes as a result of seeking His word and landing on a verse or word that fuels my faith. That is what peace is.
Peace is faith in knowing that you can trust God.
Peace looks different to us at different times. The kind of peace we are seeking depends on the circumstances we are in.
peace while we deal with a family member’s terminal diagnosis
peace while we ask God what our next step should be in our career
peace while we wait for a baby blessing
The great thing about having a “piece of peace” is that it is available to us always! If we want a piece of peace, all we need to do is tap to into the Holy Spirit inside of us!
In the bible, there is a verse that says, “love covers a multitude of sins” 1 Peter 4:8 .
God’s peace also covers a multitude of circumstances and situations that we are in. No matter what we are facing and going through the “peace of God that transcends all understanding” is there for us to grasp.
When we pray for peace, we can have the confident hope that God will give us the peace we need right at that moment through the Holy Spirit!
Thank you for the peace that you have already equipped us with to get through each day as well as get through the tough times that we face. You have promised us suffering in this world, but your word also says that we will not suffering as the world does. Because we have you we have the confidence to go forward in faith and go in peace. Thank you for empowering us with the same spirit that rose Jesus from the grave. When I feel weak and unsure I pray you help me tap into that mighty power that I have within, the power that conquered the grace will conquer every fear and I pray that we are covered with your peace each and everyday.
In your name I pray, AMEN.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” Romans 8:11
