stephanie miller - I'll give up anything but that

I’m going to go out on a limb and ask how many of you have felt God convicting you to give up something for a season? Or maybe it wasn’t to give something up, maybe He just made it known to you that you were running to that one thing, that worldly comfort BEFORE you would run to him. Or maybe it was just a matter of over indulging, you know there IS such thing as too much of a good thing.

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”–but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”–but not everything is beneficial. 1 Corinthian 10:23 (NLT)

With the new year here, there is no doubt that many of us are looking for ways to change our behaviors and make ourselves better. In our never ending pursuit to be better and do better, we are inevitably given opportunities to give up something that doesn’t serve us or serve God. For me that THING is watching television.

I enjoy watching T.V. I have a list of shows that I watch regularly and if I can’t catch them the night they are on. then I will watch them on demand. I never thought watching T.V was a problem until I noticed what I did as I watched T.V, and dug deeper into my need to have the T.V on, or watch it on demand.

When I first felt the Lord nudging me to give up watching so much T.V I protested, “but what am I supposed to do, my husband is gone all day I need to hear other voices in the house?” So I went about what I was doing, filling my house with shows that were’t beneficial to me and justifying it as, ‘background noise.” When I did start paying attention to how I felt and what I did to make myself feel better (truth be told I had long noticed it, but not allowed myself to pay attention to it) I discovered that my tireless T.V watching was almost always paired with mindless eating.

I had been working so hard to free myself of the mindless eating, that I had ignored that the eating was triggered by watching T.V!

As scary as it was to step away from the T.V and not turn it on, even just to fill my house with noise, God has now filled my house with greater things. Joel Osteen stated,” God will never ask you to give up something without giving you something better in return.”

I had been so consumed by T.V that I did not notice how much I neglected other areas of my life, like my writing. Watching T.V. had become a hurdle to my spiritual growth that was hindering my ability to serve God and others. Watching so much T.V had dulled my senses and my spirit and had made everything else seem like a daunting task.

Without the distraction of T.V., now I am able to focus on the things God has called me to do, like writing and leading others. I can sit down and not “put off” what God is asking me to do or write, but do so with a happy heart.

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. Matthew 16:25 (NIV)

Sweet Friends, if I can just encourage you in this one thing for this year, let God search your heart and bring to your attention anything that has become an idol and ask Him to give you the courage and obedience to do something about it.

Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 1 Samuel 12:21

I titled this post, ” I’ll give up anything but that” because my T.V watching was the one comfort I thought I could not live without, and now I realize that by giving it up, I gained so much more.

I challenge you, beautiful daughters, what is that one thing that you feel that you cannot possibly live without? We all tend to have something that provides us comfort, maybe for you it’s not T.V but it is something else

that extra large bowl of ice cream in the evening

that glass or two of wine after a hard day of work

that trip to the store to buy new clothes to make you happy

Can you remove that one thing from your life, even just for a short time and watch and see what happens? I would love to hear what you are giving up, so please comment below so I can pray for you!

(note: I didn’t come to the decision to give up watching T.V until AFTER I asked for prayer for my disobedience and my heart to be willing to surrender. If this is where you are at and you would like prayer for a heart willing to give up THAT ONE THING, I encourage you to find a fellow sister in Christ and share your concern with her. I promise she will happy to pray for you and don’t be surprised if she asks the same of you!)

Holding someone accountable is one of the best gifts you can give someone!
