what-keeps-you-from-going-for-it-_stacy hudsonI have always had this dream of being a writer. I have written poems and short stories for as long as I can remember. I even changed my major to English in college in order to do so. But it wasn’t until about a year ago that I finally called myself a “writer”. Even though I published a poetry book after college. It was self published and back then that didn’t feel good enough for me. Probably, because someone told me so. I published the book anyway because I felt it was God leading me to do so. I’m glad I did it. I am glad I didn’t listen to my doubts or other people. I am glad I chose to go for it rather than go hide from it. I am a writer, book or not, because God calls me to write even if only for Him alone. I am sure some of the writers of the Bible never imagined the impact their words would have thousands of years later. They probably didn’t feel like writers either. But God!

If God has placed a dream in your heart what keeps you from going for it?

I imagine it is one of these reasons:

  • Self doubt
  • Fear
  • Lack of resources
  • Someone told you that you couldn’t do it

There are so many reasons we doubt ourselves. But the main reason is because we are trying to put our confidence in ourselves and not God. Same thing with fear. We are full of fear because we are not full of faith. If God has called you to do something He will make a way if you put your faith in Him and His plans.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

If lack of resources is your reason I would venture to say that you are working your hardest trying to make enough to change your circumstances. What about your heart though? Are you spending enough time with Jesus to let Him prepare your heart to trust Him to provide for all your needs?

The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. Psalm 34:10

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?  Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?  So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:25-34

If someone told you that you couldn’t do it, that reveals more about them than you. They don’t think they can do it so of course you can’t either. They are dealing with self doubt and spewing it on you. If God has called you to do something you have to decide who you are going to let direct your future. Will you trust the person who doesn’t even trust themselves or will you trust the creator of the universe?
