Can I just be totally honest? Life’s been hard lately. Like really hard.
It seems everywhere I turn, there’s bad news. Cancer on the rise. It’s an election year. Violence is on the rise. The weather is wrecking havoc. Hurricanes. Earthquakes. Destruction.
It’s in the news. It’s on social media. And when I try to hide from it, people call me to tell me about it!
Some days I want to hide. Move to a cabin in the woods and never come out! Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels this way!
As someone who is easily prone to anxiety (read my testimony for more), these times make me very anxious and panicky.
As I look around me and see the mess and feel the mess, I’m reminded of these verses in Romans:
“For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.”
Romans 8:22-23 NLT
This is not our home!! And not only do I know this, but these verses tell me our planet knows it! Our time here is getting shorter and shorter each day. And I know all these things are leading up to us going home!
Yes, it’s hard somedays to get out of bed. I cry and hurt to see everything going on. It gets overwhelming. But listen to this:
“Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.”
Romans 8:18 NLT
I love the way the Message version words it:
“That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.”
Romans 8:18-21 MSG
These verses give me such hope! No matter how hard and depressing and scary things get here, they are nothing compared to the glory we have waiting on us! Hold on dear sisters!! Don’t quit now! (I’m preaching to myself, too!) We are too close to our prize…Heaven and seeing Jesus! And when we get there, all this junk will fade away! It’ll be worth it!
Dear Jesus, help us to remember you when times get hard. Help us remember what you have planned for us on the other side of this earth. Help us keep our focus on you, not on the icky going on around us. Give us peace and strength as we walk through these hard days! In Jesus’ name, Amen!
